The Crown Chakra

May 14, 2009

The Sanskrit name is Sahasrara, meaning ‘thousandfold’, reflecting the infinite nature of this chakra. It is the fastest spinning of all the chakras as it vibrates at the highest frequency.

This chakra is the colour violet, but is also associated with white, as white is a combination of all the colours, just as this chakra combines all the other chakras.

It is located at the crown of the head and is literally ‘the crown’ of the chakra system, symbolising the highest state of enlightenment and facilitating our spiritual development. It is associated with the brain, the cerebral cortex, the central nervous system, muscular system, skeletal system, skin, the right eye, and the pineal and pituitary glands.

The element of the crown chakra is thought, as this chakra is associated with the highest functions of the mind. It is our mind which creates the belief systems that control our thoughts and actions – and our thoughts which ultimately create our lives. The higher our thoughts, the more meaningful our lives become.

The crown chakra is our spiritual communicator and connector, and it is through this vortex that the life force is dispersed from the universe into the lower six chakras (as shown in the diagram in my ‘Chakra System’ blog). With this connection intact, connecting us with the universal energies, or collective unconscious – whichever term you prefer – we can receive information and ideas which can be run through the lower chakras and then brought into manifestation. It also functions as a protection system as it only allows us to receive information that we are physically and emotionally capable of dealing with. As we develop and progress in our spirituality, the crown chakra allows an increasing amount of information to filter through, thus continually providing us with greater awareness as we grow.

This chakra is affected by thoughts and feelings about trusting your intuition, receiving guidance from the universal source and spirituality.

If this chakra is balanced and clean, you will obtain expanded awareness on an emotional level. You will have the ability to perceive, analyse and assimilate information and be intelligent, thoughtful and open-minded. You will also have the ability to trust in life and see the larger pattern within your life. When energy is flowing through this centre, you will feel the bliss of your own ‘inner sanctuary’, feel alignment of your mind, body and spirit, and awareness of your infinite potential. You will feel healed and whole, bring your internal and external lives into harmony, feel at one with the universe and find yourself naturally ‘living in the now’. With a balanced crown chakra, you will be in a state of bliss beyond the usual human experience – you will find absolute peace and total awareness – the state called enlightenment – though at first, only for moments at a time. However, as you learn to hold this state for longer, you will eventually be able to live it simultaneously with your human life and your life will be transformed forever. You will feel calm and serene, and radiate peace and love to all around you. At this point in your development, you will also follow your calling and rededicate your life to whatever is most important to you, be it love, peace, teaching, healing, your own spiritual growth or the spiritual growth of others.

However, if this chakra is blocked (underactive), you may suffer from the following:

Psychological/emotional problems: apathy, confusion, depression, lack of inspiration, difficulty thinking for yourself; materialism, greed, domination of others, excess in lower chakras (emphasis on physical); lack of purpose, loss of meaning or identity, alienation, emptiness; contraction of energy, constantly limited; spiritual scepticism or ignorance; fear of self-development – the negative behavioural patterns that result from an unwillingness to grow and change in order to accommodate the challenges of your life; inability to see the larger pattern within your life.

Physical problems: paralysis, genetic disorders, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), chronic fatigue, sensitivity to light and sound, coma, migraines, amnesia, diseases of the muscular system, skeletal system and skin, co-ordination difficulties, cognitive delusions.

If this chakra is too open (overactive), you may be overly intellectual or feel yourself to be a member of a spiritual or intellectual elite. You may also suffer from spiritual addiction, constant frustration, psychoses or bi-polar disorder, or be unable to process energy adequately.

The crown chakra integrates all the chakras with their respective qualities and is the last milestone of the evolution of human awareness. At this stage in our evolution, we are now at a level which corresponds to this chakra, which means that every one of us at least has the potential to enter this new realm of perception.
